Pagan Prisoner Needs

What Pagans in  Prisons need:
  • Volunteers in the prisons.  Volunteering in a state prison doesn't have to be a huge commitment.  Volunteers are allowed to visit three times before beginning the formal volunteer training.  If you have a special skill or talent, consider teaching it to an established Pagan ministry group as a one time occurrence.  If you're ready for a larger commitment contact your local prisons chaplain to inquire about what needs they have.
  • Welcoming groups.  Inmates are often concerned about how to continue their Pagan spiritual practice after parole.  There is a need for open and welcoming Pagan groups in all parts of the US.  If your group meets in public locations and would like to offer your companionship to recently paroled inmates contact me to be added to our list.
  • Books.  As a minority religion, Pagans tend to have less quality spiritual texts available to them while in prison.  The most requested topics include books about specific traditions, Gods and Goddesses, Pagan alternatives to 12 Step programs, Pagan prayers, symbology, astrology, dream interpretation and Pagan history.  Books can be mailed to your local chaplain.
  • Tarot Cards.   Each state has its own set of rules about tarot decks.  Some will not allow any decks that have nudity on them.  Check with your local chaplain to find what decks have been approved in your area.  Consider donating a deck you no longer use, or purchasing some when you see them on sale!
  • Runes.  Runes are also popular in Pagan groups.  Sets made from wood and bone are ideal for prison setting.  Again, consider donating a set if you are able!
